The red carpets will be rolling out soon in Vancouver for this year’s 30th Vancouver International Film Festival. I had a fantastic time attending the VIFF Media Conference at the Vancity Theatre. Trish McGrath, VIFF Director of Development, Alan Franey, Festival Director and Terry McEvoy, Canadian Images Programmer were some of the prominent speakers who entertained the audience with festival plans. VIFF 2011 will feature over 375 films from 75 countries, more than 600 screenings and 80 Canadian films. Guests can also look forward to forum days, special guests and presentations and one of my favourite topics of discussion, the Galas. Many of the film makers and actors from the festival’s Canadian films came out as well.
It was wonderful to see the large turn-out at the conference. I can’t even imagine how many people will be attending the actual festival! At the luncheon held afterwards, I had the pleasure of meeting many new colleagues and seeing some friends. I caught up with the lovely actress Chelah Horsdal. Since interviewing her on the Leo Awards Red Carpet, she told me she just finished filming for the CBC pilot Wish List. I also chatted with actor Gabrielle Rose and Kelly-Ruth Mercier, Director of the Canadian Images film Move Out Clean (produced by Robyn Wiener) starring actor David Richmond-Peck (another actor who I interviewed on the Leo Awards Red Carpet). I had a blast dishing about Gala plans with Barbara Chirinos, VIFF’s Gala Producer, Facility Manager and Special Events Coordinator. She revealed to me the theme of the Opening Night’s Gala and since I promised not to tell, I can only say it will be one spectacular event.
